Come ride the rails on VIA Rail’s Skeena Train. Travelling from Prince George to Jasper “via” rail gives you a unique, fun and inspiring journey through areas steeped in natural and cultural wonders. Winding its way through the Yellowhead Pass and along the wielding Skeena River, you will be treated to some of BC’s most spectacular views. Combine this with the Icefields Parkway, one of the most spectacular drives in the world, and Banff National Park, known for its rich heritage as one of the world’s most breathtaking mountain destinations and you have a winner of a vacation!
Travelling north up the Okanagan Valley, we make our way to Cache Creek to meet our friends from Paramount Travel. We cruise the Cariboo Highway, a route that follows much of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road and the Gold Rush Trail of the 1860’s, to Williams Lake. Set in the heart of the Cariboo, Williams Lake is the land of cowboys, miners and beautiful scenery. Our overnight stay is at the Coast Fraser Inn.
Today, we travel to where urban sophistication and the spectacular wilderness meet at the confluence of the Nechako River and the Mighty Fraser. Prince George is rich with history and today we get a firsthand glimpse of that as we visit Railway and Forestry Museum back to an era when the railway was the region’s lifeline and forestry was becoming BC’s future. Indulge in a delicious lunch at a local brewpub where fresh local ingredients are sourced and then created for an artisan experience. This evening’s overnight accommodation is at the Sandman Signature Hotel. Set in the heart of Prince George, this stylish and intriguing hotel is designed to provide us with an outstanding stay. All aboard Canada’s only passenger rail service, VIA Rail, as we begin our scenic journey. Settle into your comfortable seating; enjoy a box lunch onboard as you take in the great stretches of wilderness, lakes and rivers punctuated by evidence of the ancient traditions of the native peoples, the not-too-distant pioneer days of steam trains and panning for gold, and of course modern development that lie just outside your window. The fall colours will be spectacular at this time and wildlife such as bear, moose, elk, deer, wolves and coyote may show themselves. This evening we arrive in Jasper for our overnight stay at Whistlers Inn, a cozy alpine hotel centrally located in town. (B, L)
People come from all over the world to soak in the magnificence of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the Icefields Parkway, Canada’s national treasure and voted consistently as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. The crowds have gone but the snow has not yet arrived at this time of year, so you have the unique opportunity to experience the vistas quietly and serenely, as they should be appreciated. Admire the great Columbia Icefields and wonder at the Weeping Wall. Enjoy a lunch at The Crossing Resort, which is nestled at the base of the towering Mt. Wilson. Our destination is Canmore, where we settle into the Wyndham. Set amongst the stunning mountains near Banff National Park, this comfortable and new hotel will be our home for the next two evenings. (B, L)
Some great Rocky Mountain experiences are in store for us today. Capture the amazing sights and sounds of Johnston Canyon’s Lower Falls, embrace the beauty of Lake Minnewanka’s glacier waters and experience the small-town charm of Banff. You will have time to sightsee, enjoy a complimentary lunch and shop. Admission is included to the newly restored Cave & Basin National Monument, where tourism to the Rockies first began. Back at the Wyndham, there are plenty of great restaurants and cozy pubs to try for dinner. (B, L)
Heading west, the scenery continues to amaze as we visit the village of Lake Louise. Lake Louise is the jewel of the Rockies, surrounded by mountains with Victoria Glacier tumbling down the valley towards its emerald green waters. Stroll the shore and admire the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Back in BC, we bid farewell to our friends from Paramount Travel and head for home. (B)
