We begin our journey north up the Okanagan Valley and explore the Cariboo Highway, a route that follows much of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road and the Gold Rush Trail of the 1860’s. This classic stretch runs through rolling hills and prairies, granite-walled canyons and impressive river valleys where ranching, logging and mining are the mainstays of the local economy. Set in the heart of the Cariboo, Williams Lake is the land of cowboys, miners and beautiful scenery. Our overnight stay is at the Ramada Inn.
Nothing says “Road Trip” like BC’s Highway 20 and today we invite you to embrace the adventure while taking in the breathtaking scenery through the unbelievable Chilcotin countryside; travelling beneath the forested flanks of Desous Mountain and crossing the swirling currents of the Fraser River. The vast Chilcotin Plateau unfolds towards the Coast Mountains leaving behind one world and entering another as we make our way to beautiful Bella Coola. Our two-night stay is at the Bella Coola Valley Inn. (B, D)
Located in the heart of the Great Bear Rain Forest, Bella Coola encourages you to let go of the hectic pace and embrace the great outdoors. Sharing habitat with the black and grizzly bears, eagles, salmon and whales, Bella Coola boasts spectacular mountain scenery, rivers, trees and wildlife. Situated close to the stunning and vast Tweedsmuir Park and set within a lush valley and mountains, a local guide takes us to the Norwegian Heritage House, Clayton Falls and more. (B, L, D)
Board BC Ferries’ ‘Northern Sea Wolf’ as we embark on a ten-hour scenic Discovery Coast Passage cruise. With the setting sun behind us, the monolithic rock formations looming over the narrow Burke Channel give the cruise a European flavour. The ship’s two upper decks are an excellent vantage point from which to watch for logging camps, barge houses and abandoned settlements. Experience the beauty of the rugged glacial fjords, towering rainforests and First Nations history and don’t forget to bring your binoculars as the ferry will slow if orcas are spotted. Arriving in Port Hardy early evening, our one-night stay is at the Kwa’Lilas Hotel. (B)
Following the scenic Highway 19 along the Strait of Georgia coast, we make a stop in the tiny and picturesque village of Telegraph Cove. Nestled in a sheltered inlet near the famous Broughton Archipelago, the old fishing village of Telegraph Cove offers you dining and exploring options. Our evening will be spent at Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River. This legendary fishing lodge offers spectacular views of the Discovery Passage and the unspoiled wilderness of the island. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a farewell dinner. (B, D)
Today, we board BC Ferries and make our way back to the Mainland. Bidding farewell to new-found friends, we return home with wonderful memories from our Bella Coola adventure. (B)
