Travelling north up the Okanagan Valley we make our way to Cache Creek to meet our friends from Paramount Travel. Following the Cariboo Highway our overnight stay will be at the Billy Barker Casino Hotel, modelled after the paddlewheelers that plied the Fraser River during the gold rush of the late 1800’s. Tonight we invite you to join your fellow travellers for a complimentary welcome reception. (WR)
We continue our journey to the land of the Cariboo and Chilcotin, past cowboy towns and into the natural resource heart of the province. Indulge in a delicious lunch at a local brew pub where fresh local ingredients are sourced and then created for an artisan experience. This evening’s overnight accommodation is the Sandman Hotel located in downtown Prince George. (B, L)
All aboard Canada’s only passenger rail service, VIA Rail, as we begin our scenic journey. Settle into your comfortable seating, but don’t miss a visit to the dome car, accessible to all passengers. There are snacks, beverages and meals for purchase on board, and lots of great information to inform you of the route along the way. Great stretches of wilderness, lakes and rivers are punctuated by evidence along the tracks of the ancient traditions of the native peoples, the not-too-distant pioneer days of steam trains and panning for gold, and of course modern development. The fall colours will be spectacular at this time, and wildlife such as bear, moose, elk, deer, wolves, and coyote may show themselves. Arriving in Jasper in the early evening, check into the Lobstick for our overnight stay. (B)
People come from all over the world to soak in the magnificence of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the Icefields Parkway, Canada’s national treasure and voted consistently as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. The crowds have gone but the snow has not arrived at this time of year, so you have the unique opportunity to experience the vistas quietly, serenely, as they should be appreciated. Admire the great Columbia Icefields, and wonder at the Weeping Wall and enjoy a complimentary lunch at The Crossing Resort, which is nestled at the base of the towering Mt. Wilson. No matter if it is your first or fortieth time here, the scenery continues to inspire awe and wonder with its beauty. Our destination is Lake Louise, where we settle into the Lake Louise Inn for a two night stay. (L)
There are some great Rocky Mountain sights in store for today. Just a short drive from the village is Lake Louise, jewel of the Rockies, surrounded by mountains with Victoria Glacier tumbling down the valley towards the emerald waters. Stroll the shore and maybe have a coffee in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Then take the Bow Valley Parkway scenic route to Banff, where wildlife sightings are much more frequent. Here you will have time for sightseeing, a complimentary lunch and shopping. Admission is included to the newly restored Cave & Basin National Monument, where tourism to the Rockies first began. Back in Lake Louise, there are plenty of great restaurants and cozy pubs to try for dinner. (L)
Heading west, the scenery continues to amaze as we cross journey through three more national parks and three more mountain ranges. Back in BC, we bid farewell to our fellow journeyers and head for home.
