VIA Rail’s Skeena Train travels the northern rail line from Prince Rupert to Jasper, through land steeped in natural and cultural wonders. Ride the rails on the eastern half of the route, from Prince George to Jasper, past rustic settlements, farms and sawmills dotting the lake-studded landscape and into the rugged Rocky Mountains. Combine this with the Icefields Parkway, one of the most spectacular drives in the world, and Banff National Park, and you have a winner of a vacation!
Joining our friends from Paramount Travel, begin the journey north through the lands of the Cariboo and Chilcotin, past cowboy towns like Clinton and Williams Lake and into the natural resource heart of the province. Overnight is in Prince George at the Prestige Treasure Cove Casino & Hotel. (L)
All aboard Canada’s only passenger rail service, VIA Rail, as we begin our scenic journey. Settle into your comfortable seating, but don’t miss a visit to the dome car, accessible to all passengers. There are snacks, beverages and meals for purchase on board, and lots of great information to inform you of the route along the way. Great stretches of wilderness, lakes and rivers are punctuated by evidence along the tracks of the ancient traditions of the native peoples, the not-too-distant pioneer days of steam trains and panning for gold, and of course modern development. The fall colours will be spectacular at this time, and wildlife such as bear, moose, elk, deer, wolves, and coyote may show themselves. Arriving in Jasper in the early evening, check into the Crimson Lodge for overnight. (B)
People come from all over the world to soak in the magnificence of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and the Icefields Parkway, Canada’s national treasure and voted consistently as one of the most spectacular drives in the world. The crowds have gone but the snow has not arrived at this time of year, so you have the unique opportunity to experience the vistas quietly, serenely, as they should be appreciated. Stops today could include thundering Athabasca or Sunwapta Falls or glacier green lakes like Peyto or Waterfowl. Admire the great Columbia Icefields, and wonder at the Weeping Wall. No matter if it is your first or fortieth time here, the scenery continues to inspire awe and wonder with its beauty. Our destination is Lake Louise, where we settle into the Lake Louise Inn for a two night stay. (L)
There are some great Rocky Mountain sights in store for today. Just a short drive from the village is Lake Louise, jewel of the Rockies, surrounded by mountains with Victoria glacier tumbling down the valley towards the emerald waters. Stroll the shore and maybe have a coffee in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Then take the Bow Valley Parkway scenic route to Banff, where wildlife sightings are much more frequent. There is time for a walk in Johnson Canyon, then head to Banff for sightseeing, lunch and shopping. Admission is included to the newly restored Cave & Basin National Monument, where tourism to the Rockies first began. Back in Lake Louise, there are plenty of great restaurants and cozy pubs to try for dinner.
Heading west, the scenery continues to amaze as we cross journey through three more national parks and three more mountain ranges. Back in BC, we bid farewell to our fellow journeyers and head for home.
