Explore the lakes, waterfalls, rivers, mountains, beaches and rain forest that make up this emerald paradise. With over 172 islands and reefs dotting the waters of San Juan County, the journey by ferry is a highlight in itself!
We depart for the Lower Mainland this morning where we join our fellow traveling companions from Paramount Travel before crossing the border into Washington State. Following lunch in Bellingham, continue south through the Skagit Valley arriving at the stunning four diamond Tulalip Resort & Casino this afternoon. (MV)
Take in the beautiful Seattle skyline as we travel south through the city and into Tacoma. Cross over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the fifth longest suspension bridge in the United States to Kitsap Peninsula. Arrive into Bremerton, and enjoy an independent lunch at one of the many eateries on the waterfront while enjoying the view of Sinclair Inlet, the naval ships and the Bremerton Marina. Following lunch visit the Puget Sound Navy Museum where visitors can explore the naval history of the region and experience life as a sailor. Then walk next door to the USS Turner Joy, the famed Navy destroyer from the Vietnam War. An active and educational facility makes the USS Turner Joy a unique and lasting legacy to Puget Sound’s maritime heritage. Arrive into Ocean Shores, situated on a sandy peninsula and offering more than six miles of ocean beaches. Our home for the next two nights is the oceanfront Shilo Inn, with all rooms offering a balcony and unsurpassed views of the Pacific Ocean. (B)
Today we visit the Ocean Shores Coastal Interpretive Center. Located at the southern end of Ocean Shores, the Center is surrounded by abundant natural beauty. It offers hands-on nature exhibits as well as displays describing the indigenous peoples, early pioneers, shipwrecks and such natural phenomena as tsunamis. Walk the interpretive nature trail behind the Center to see native plants and explore the outdoor exhibits. Join us for lunch at the Pacific Northwest’s largest Irish Pub – the Galway then the rest of the day is free to explore on your own. Walk the miles and miles of sandy beach, wander into town or try your luck at nearby Quinault Casino. Ocean Shores is well known for its eccentric charm and bustling sidewalks. (B, L)
Enjoy a day of scenic delights as we travel the beautiful Olympic Peninsula via Hwy 101 north. Olympic National Park provides a diverse and stunning world – from the fog-shrouded coast with booming surf to North America’s finest temperate rain forest with an annual rainfall of over 12 feet! Visit historic Lake Quinault Lodge, a grand and rustic lodge built in 1926. Stop in at the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center and venture out on one of three easy loop trails that give a great sampling of the diversity of the climate in this area. End the day at the Olympic National Park Visitors Center in Port Angeles then check into the Red Lion Hotel. Located on Hollywood Beach, the hotel’s great location overlooks the beautiful Strait of Juan de Fuca and is just one block from the town center. (B)
Join us for an early morning trip up to the top of Hurricane Ridge where on a clear day, views of the Olympic Mountains and Strait of Juan de Fuca are stunning. Continuing to Port Townsend, board the ferry and sail Puget Sound over to Fidalgo Island. Cross Deception Pass Bridge where the views from the 180’ bridge are spectacular as water rushes through the narrow passage below enroute to Anacortes. Board your second ferry of the day for an afternoon cruise through the multiple islands populating these stunning waters. Arrive on San Juan Island at Friday Harbor, a charming, historic, walkable seaside town and our home for the next two nights. Accommodation is at the Friday Harbor Suites. (B)
A local guide will join us as we explore the San Juan Scenic Byway. Hear all about the ‘Pig War’, the last standoff between the Americans and the British, and visit the two Castillos of San Juan Islands National Historic Park. Bring your binoculars to Lime Kiln Point, one of the best places to site migrating whales from the shore. Visit the Whale Museum, dedicated to promoting stewardship of whales, particularly the orcas, and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. After, you will have time to explore Friday Harbor on your own. This evening we gather for a final night dinner at a local favorite. (B, D)
Our adventure draws to a close as we board the ferry for the return trip through the San Juan Islands to the mainland. Crossing the border, bid farewell to our friends from Paramount Travel and continue on to the Okanagan and Kamloops with wonderful memories of the waterways, mountains and rain forests of the Pacific Northwest.
