Begin the day high in the West Hills of Portland where the Pittock Mansion soars 1,000 feet above the city’s skyline. A century-old symbol of Portland’s dramatic transformation from small lumber town to bustling city, it’s an architectural wonder – no other place offers a more breathtaking view or a more revealing glimpse of Portland’s past. We then take you to the largest continuously operated outdoor market in the US. Located in historic Old Town, you are given the opportunity to meet over 350 local artists while strolling down row upon row of unique handcrafted items. The day would not be complete without a city tour of the City of Roses. Portland is a city of contrasts, a lively city centre surrounded by natural beauty and this afternoon we will learn about and see many of the varied attractions the “Rose City” has to offer. (B,L)
1926 not only saw the birth of Route 66, but of Highway 99 as well and today we will be taking a beautiful and leisurely journey on “old” 99 as we continue west to Newport, OR. Newport’s Bayfront is a historic working waterfront on which you can wander the boardwalk enjoying the shops, galleries, chowder houses and restaurants. A “floating adventure” awaits us as we set sail on a safe and comfortable vessel in search of gray whales, harbor porpoise, pelicans and an abundance of marine birds. Sit back and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the coastline including historic bridges and spectacular lighthouses. Our evening meal will be held at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This unique setting allows you the opportunity to view some of the world’s most beautiful creatures in their natural element. Our evening is spent at Elizabeth Oceanfront Suites. (B, D)
Traveling along the scenic coast from Newport, we visit Heceta Head Lighthouse. For more than a century this iconic lighthouse has guided mariners from its perch 206 feet above the Pacific. Continuing into the Oregon Dunes National Park area, prepare for a day of adventure. Experience firsthand miles of wind-sculpted sand dunes, some towering over 500 feet above sea level, while onboard a giant dune buggy. In historic old Florence, stroll along the boardwalk, browse the unique shops or enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants. Visit one of the oldest continuously working Myrtlewood factories on the South Coast before arriving in North Bend at the Mill Casino & Hotel located on the shore of Coos Bay. (B)
We are joined today by a local guide who will introduce us to the true beauty of the Oregon Coast and local area. Begin with the History and Maritime Museum which offers a look into the life along Oregon’s South Coast, both past and present before we arrive at Shore Acres State Park. Perched on rugged sandstone cliffs high above the ocean, the park is an exciting and unexpected combination of beautiful natural and constructed features. Explore the park and discover lushly planted gardens and spectacular ocean vistas. Join us for dinner this evening at the hotel. (B,D)
Known as one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the US; we continue our journey south hugging the coastline along Hwy 101. A stroll through Bandon’s Old Town shopping district is a feast for the senses. We invite you to explore its 10 square blocks of shops and restaurants while taking in its history and culture. Then be prepared to walk and talk with the animals. West Coast Game Park allows visitors a “hands on” experience with exotic and unusual animals. Once you enter the park’s gates you will be immersed amongst hundreds of free-roaming animals for feeding and petting. Our evening will be spent at Jots Resort. (B)
Welcome to California! The northern part of the state is home to incredible Redwood forests, and our drive winds through part of this incredible belt of massive trees. Highlight is the world-famous Avenue of Giants, a 31-mile portion of the old highway surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world. Several stops are included so you can get up close and personal with the forest. The Best Western Humboldt Bay Inn in Eureka is our overnight location. (B)
Travelling the spectacular Trinity Scenic Byway and paralleling the beautiful “wild and scenic” Trinity River, we follow the path of early miners and settlers as we make our way to Redding. This gorgeous stretch of road offers us some of the most diverse scenery, wildlife and a front row seat to the cultural and historical aspects of the region. Enjoy your evening at the Red Lion. (B)
Beginning our journey north, follow the I-5 and Hwy 97 through the forests of northern California and into central Oregon. Our overnight stay is at the Holiday Inn. (B)
