Arrive into Portland mid-afternoon, then head directly to the Oregon Coast. Overnight is at the Comfort Suites in Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. (MV)
The day begins with a visit to the 125 ft high Astoria Column, a hand-painted spiral frieze that would stretch more than 500 feet if unwound. Enjoy an unrivaled view of Young’s Bay, the Coast Range, the mighty Columbia River, and in the distance—the Pacific Ocean. Our scenic journey continues as we travel south along Hwy 101, known as one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in the US. Explore Cannon Beach, named one of the world’s 100 most beautiful places by National Geographic and known for Haystack Rock, which rises proudly 235 feet from out of the sand and the sea. Spend time exploring the many art galleries, bistros, bakeries and gift stores. The Tillamook Cheese Factory provides an opportunity to sample some of their famous fresh-made goodies and cheese. In Newport, learn about the vital role of lighthouses at Yaquina Head, then check into oceanfront Elizabeth Street Inn for overnight. Enjoy seafood chowder in the lobby at 5 pm and fresh baked cookies before bed. Weather permitting, join us for a bonfire on the beach this evening. (B)
Prepare for a day of adventure as we enter the Oregon Dunes National Park area. Experience firsthand miles of wind-sculpted sand dunes, some towering over 500 feet above sea level, while onboard a giant dune buggy. In historic old Florence, enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk, browse the unique shops or enjoy a delicious meal in one of the many restaurants. Visit one of the oldest continuously working Myrtlewood factories on the South Coast before arriving in North Bend at the Mill Casino & Hotel located on the shore of Coos Bay. (B)
We are joined today by a local historian who will introduce us to the true beauty of the Oregon Coast and local area. Begin with the History and Maritime Museum which offers a look into the life along Oregon’s South Coast, both past and present before we arrive at Shore Acres State Park. Perched on rugged sandstone cliffs high above the ocean, the park is an exciting and unexpected combination of beautiful natural and constructed features. Explore the park and discover lushly planted gardens and spectacular ocean vistas. Join us for dinner this evening at the hotel. (B, D)
Leaving the coast, we wind our way to Winston where we embark on a wildlife safari that tours the continents on a drive-through animal expedition where YOU are the one being watched by the more than 500 animal species from around the world.
