It’s “all aboard” for the first of many train trips you will experience in the next several days. Board Amtrak’s Cascades train in Seattle then sit back and enjoy the ride as you witness some of the most distinctive cities and spectacular natural attractions in North America along the route. Arrive into Salem late this afternoon and enjoy a chance to unwind at the full service Red Lion Hotel. (B)
Continue the journey south through the rolling hills of Southern Oregon and into Northern California. Take in the beauty of Mt. Shasta and the blue-green waters of Shasta Lake as we arrive into Redding; home to more than 250 days of sunshine per year and surrounded by magnificent landscapes. Our overnight is the Red Lion Hotel. (B)
Leaving volcano country behind, sit back, relax and enjoy the sights as we travel past the mountains and lakes and the fertile and agricultural farmland of Northern California. Arrive into Sacramento in time to enjoy an afternoon in Old Town including the California State Railroad Museum. Often cited as one of the best railroad museums in North America, visitors can learn about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, the railroad’s role in history and can look at historic locomotives and train cars. This evening enjoy a dinner onboard the Delta King Paddle Wheeler. Although the Delta King no longer cruises, this beautifully restored 1920’s era riverboat provides the perfect backdrop for an evening outing. (B, D)
It’s “All Aboard” the California Zephyr for our train adventure to Reno. Following the same course as the historic Transcontinental Railroad, experience some of California’s most stunning scenery as we journey east over the Sierra Nevada Mountains arriving into the “Biggest Little City in the World” late this afternoon. The train depot is located in the heart of downtown, close to your hotel for the next two nights at the Silver Legacy. (B)
This morning drive out to Carson City; Nevada’s State Capital where we board the historic V&T Railway and ride the historic short line up to Virginia City. At its peak, Virginia City was a thriving metropolis of 25,000 citizens. Silver and gold were buried deep beneath her streets and men and women traveled from around the world to live and work here. Walk along the sidewalks of yesteryear where much is as it was 140 years ago. Return to Reno this afternoon.
Following a late check out, we head over to the Silver Peak Brewery and Restaurant for lunch. The rest of the afternoon is spent at the National Automobile Museum where you will not only revel in the more than 200 glorious cars but relive their stories. Walk through the cobblestone street scenes, honk the antique “ooga” horn or don a period costume for a unique photo opp. See for yourself why this is one of America’s Five Greatest Automobile Museums. It’s then back to the train depot to board Amtrak’s California Zephyr for the evening run to Elko arriving around 9:00 pm this evening. Our home for the night is the Red Lion Hotel and Casino. (L)
Nevada landscapes continue to unfold as we travel along the Great Basin Highway to the silver mining town of Ely. Arrive at the best preserved short line railroad in North America, the Nevada Northern Railway. Find yourself engulfed in Ely’s outdoor gallery where world renowned artists have painted White Pine County’s history on the buildings throughout the town as we are joined by a local step-on for a town mural tour before we depart to Mesquite. Following a scenic stop at Cathedral Gorge, arrive into the town of Mesquite. Set within the ruggedly beautiful Virgin River Valle with its warm climate and more than 300 days a year of sunshine, this community is truly an oasis in the desert. Our two-night stay is at the Casablanca Resort & Casino. (MV)
The fall colors beckon and guarantee to make our visit to Zion National Park even more spectacular today. Board an open-air sightseeing tram on a tour through this incredible natural wonder. From the floor of the canyon gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Return to Mesquite for a free evening. (MV, BL)
