September 21, 2018 - Wenatchee to Winthrop, WA

In the heart of the Grand Coulee lies the Dry Falls cataract. This 3.5-mile-wide chasm of basalt, with a drop of 400 feet, was left high and dry thousands of years ago as the last of several Ice Age floods swept through the Grand Coulee.  Today we visit its overlook and the Dry Falls Visitors Center featuring indoor exhibits highlighting the Ice Age and early human history of the region.  Continuing the loop we visit the Grand Coulee Dam and its Visitor Center.   A concrete gravity dam located on the Columbia River, The Grand Coulee Dam is the largest wholesaler of water in the US.  Our next two evenings will be spent in Winthrop at the award winning Sun Mountain Lodge which offers stunning views of the North Cascades, Methow Valley and the National Forest.  NOTE:  There are no TVs in the guestrooms. September 22, 2018 - Winthrop, WA

The Methow Valley is the birthplace of smokejumping.  It was here that the first experimental jumps were made, proving that firefighter could safely parachute into the rugged timbered mountains to attack wildfires and today you are offered an optional side trip to the North Cascade Smokejumper Base.  We then visit the Shafer Museum.  It was the lure of gold that brought the first settlers to the area and today you will learn the history and explore the buildings that make up this historic museum.  You are then given the opportunity to spend some time in the western themed town of Winthrop before arriving back at the Lodge for the afternoon.  We then invite you to join us for a group “Cowboy Cookout”.  A horse drawn wagon will escort you to the old homestead of the late 1800s where dinner will be served.  (D)
