February 12, 2018 - Page to Mesa, AZ

Driving through the Navajo Indian Reservation we stop at the Cameron Trading Post.  Established in 1916, this Trading Post has become a showplace for fine Native American and Southwest art.  We then explore Sedona, which is recognized as “the Most Beautiful Place in America”. It is an equal part rugged, equal part resort and regarded by Native Americans as sacred. Our next four evenings will be at the Country Inn & Suites in the dynamic region of Mesa. (B)

The morning is spent exploring the Scottsdale Main Street Arts District and 5th Avenue Shopping area.  Our adventure continues as we head further south and arrive into Tucson this afternoon.  Visit Mission San Xavier del Bac, lovingly referred to as the ‘White Dove of the Desert’.  This church was built between 1783 and 1797 and has been acclaimed as one of the finest examples of Spanish mission architecture in the United States.  This evening we head over to Trail Dust Town; a western-themed village.  Make sure you wear a (old) tie for dinner at Pinnacle Peak where the tradition of having it snipped off and displayed on the wall with over 250,000 other ties continues.  Settle in for the next two nights at the Sheraton Tucson. Stop at Old Tucson Studios, the famous movie location and theme park. Pass through the gates of this old frontier town and be transported back to a time when fearless men with six shooters ruled the west. (B, LV)

This morning we take a tram ride through Sabino Canyon; a natural desert oasis which began its formation over 12 million years ago.  We then travel through the Arizona desert, arriving in Yuma, the only National Heritage area in the west. Visit the Yuma Territorial Prison State Park. Although it only operated for 33 years, it was long enough to etch a fearsome reputation into the history of the Old West.  Walk through the original cells and dare a peek into the “dark cell”.  Our home for the evening is the Holiday Inn.
